Fourth Day of Onam ..🌺
Preparations for the Onam feast begin on Visakha, which is considered one of the most auspicious days for Onam celebrations. Since Onam marks the harvest season, this day was busy in public places and markets in the past.
In the past, harvesting took place in the months of Chingam and Kanni. The “Niraputhari” celebration in the Chingam symbolized prosperity. Harvesting, threshing, sheaf-making, and childhood fun in the haystack are just memories today.
Taking the old saying "Kanam Vittum Onam Unnanam" to heart, the tradition is that each member of the family, no matter how small, should make their own contribution to the preparations for the sumptuous feast, which is filled with 26 delicious dishes.
Today's Onam celebrations have reduced the serving of 26 dishes to either Onam sadya purchased in parcels or Onam celebrations organized by organizations. However, I believe that every family beyond cast and creed would prepare at least one pot of Onam Payasam to cherish the Onam festival.
