🌺🌻 ONAM 🌼🌸 ANIZHAM 🌺🌼

Fifth Day of Onam..🌺

Preparations for the boat race between the Chundan boats, an important symbol of the state's cultural heritage, begin on the fifth day of Onam, Anizham. This water festival has been held in Aranmula since the 4th century. Various Boat race groups from across the state arrive at Aranmula with their Chundan boats. The beauty of this water festival is the colorful procession of beautifully decorated boats followed by a boat race in which 52 Chundan Boats participate.

It is said that this historic boat race is held to commemorate the arrival of Bhattathiri from Mangattu Illam to Arnmula in a Thiruvonathoni with the food for the Thiruvonam feast and people accompanied with decorated boats to protect Bhattathiri from the attackers.

The Mangattu Illam was located in a place called Kattoor near Kozhencheri. Later, Bhattathiripad, who owned this Illam, moved to Kumaranallur in Kottayam. After that, every year on the day of Moolam, he would board a small boat from Kumaranallur and travel along the Meenachilar, Manimalayar, and Pamba rivers, reaching Kattur on the day of Uthradam. That evening, they will return to Thiruvonathoni with the food for the Thiruvonam feast and, accompanied by the boat processions, will reach the Aranmula temple on the day of Thiruvonam. The Aranmula Valla Sadya is an offering given to these rowers. The Vallasadya at the historic Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple in 2026 will be held from July 19 to September 16. The Uthrittathi Water Festival is scheduled for August 30, and the Ashtamirohini Vallasadya for September 4. There will be 15 Valla Sadyas per day.
